Understanding the Difference Between Specified Skilled Worker(SSW) Visa Type 1 and Type 2 in Japan

Many foreign workers in Japan hear about Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Type 1 and Type 2, but are not sure how they are different. The difference is very important, especially if you want to stay in Japan for a long time or live with your family.
In simple terms, the biggest differences are how long you can work in Japan and whether you can bring your family.

A Simple Overview of the Two Visas

SSW Type 1 is designed for workers with basic skills who support Japan’s industries.
SSW Type 2 is for more experienced workers who can take leadership roles at the workplace.
Type 1 has a maximum stay of five years.
Type 2 has no maximum limit, as long as you continue to renew your visa.
Family members cannot live with you under Type 1, but they can under Type 2.

What Is SSW Type 1?

SSW Type 1 is usually the first step for foreign workers.
To obtain this status, you must pass a skills test and a Japanese language test (such as JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic).
If you have successfully completed Technical Intern Training (ii), these tests may be waived.

Under Type 1, you can work in Japan for up to five years in total.
After that, you must either move to Type 2 (if eligible) or return to your home country.
You are not allowed to bring your spouse or children to live with you in Japan under this status.

What Is SSW Type 2?

SSW Type 2 is for highly skilled and experienced workers, often acting as team leaders or supervisors.
There is no upper limit on the length of stay under Type 2, as long as visa renewals are approved.
You are also allowed to bring your spouse and children to live with you in Japan.
Another major advantage is that time spent under Type 2 counts toward eligibility for permanent residence in the future.
Currently, most industries except caregiving offer a pathway to Type 2, including construction, food service, agriculture, and food manufacturing.

How to Move from Type 1 to Type 2

If your goal is to live in Japan long-term, moving from Type 1 to Type 2 is very important.
You must gain enough practical experience and pass the SSW Type 2 skills evaluation test, which is more difficult than the Type 1 test.
Your employer’s support is also essential, as they must confirm that you can work at a higher, more responsible level.
In my view, workers who actively learn Japanese and take leadership roles at work have a much higher chance of success.

Final Thoughts

SSW Type 1 is a starting point, while Type 2 is a long-term pathway.
Understanding the difference early helps you make better decisions about your career, family, and future in Japan.
If you plan carefully, SSW Type 2 can open the door to a stable life in Japan.
