在留資格には大きく分けて、就労系の資格、非就労系の資格、身分系の資格、個別に許可される資格があります。
・就労系の資格
就労系の資格とは、日本において働くことを目的として取得する在留資格であり、各外国人の方が持っている知識や技術を生かして働くことが前提となっていますので、その活動内容には制限があります。
「高度専門職」、「経営・管理」、「技術・人文知識・国際業務」、「技能」、「特定技能」など多くの種類があります。
・非就労系在留資格
非就労系在留資格とは、日本国内で就職し、働くことのできない在留資格です。ただし、資格外活動許可を取得することで、週28時間まで就労することが認められる場合があります。
「留学」、「家族滞在」、「短期滞在」などの資格があります。
・身分系の資格
身分系の資格とは、 身分や地位に基づいて与えられる居住資格で、就労制限がない在留資格です。
「永住者」「定住者」「日本人の配偶者等」「永住者の配偶者等」の4種類があります。
・個別に許可される資格
個別に許可される資格とは、法務大臣が個々の外国人について特に指定する在留資格で、現在ある在留資格に分類できない活動に従事する外国人に与えられます。やむを得ない事情により就労継続が困難な場合の特例措置として与えらてこともあります。
「特定活動」(公示されているもの、公示されていないもの)があります。

・Employment-related status(VISA)
Employment-related status is a status of residence obtained for the purpose of working in Japan, and since it is assumed that each foreigner will work by utilizing their knowledge and skills, there are restrictions on the activities they can engage in.
There are many types, such as "Highly Skilled Professional," "Business Manager," "Engineer/pecialist in Humanities/nternational Services," "Skilled Worker," and "Specified Skilled Worker."
・non-employment-related status(VISA)
Non-employment-related status is a visa that does not allow you to find employment or work in Japan. However, by obtaining permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the visa status, you may be permitted to work up to 28 hours per week.
There are visas such as "Study Abroad", "Dependent Stay", and "Short-Term Stay".
・Status(VISA) of residence based on personal status or position
Status(VISA) of residence based on personal status or position is a residence status that is given based on one's status or position and does not have any work restrictions.
There are four types: "permanent resident," "long-term resident," "spouse or child of a Japanese national," and "spouse or child of a permanent resident."
・individually permitted status(VISA)
Individually permitted status is a status of residence that is specifically designated by the Minister of Justice for each individual foreigner, and is given to foreigners who are engaged in activities that cannot be classified under existing statuses of residence. It may also be given as a special measure when it is difficult to continue working due to unavoidable circumstances.
There are "special activities" (those that have been publicly announced and those that have not).
